the beginning

HI! I’m starting this blog in hopes that it will be the beginning of an awesome adventure. My husband and I have recently decided to pursue teaching overseas. So far we have applied to over 25 schools in places like Singapore, China, Germany, Indonesia, and many more. There are several reasons for this. 1) We currently teach in North Carolina which is one of the lowest paid states in the US. I know for the most part teachers everywhere are underpaid, but we haven’t had a raise in 7 years (I don’t count the 1% slap in the face we got) and it doesn’t look like it’s going to get any better any time soon. 2) I am getting burnt (burned?) out. This is my 11th year teaching and I have been at the same school for 7 years. Don’t get me wrong…I love my school…but I am also an athletic trainer which means I am at school ALL.THE.TIME. I don’t get to spend enough time with my kids and husband…and that won’t change any time soon because it’s in my contract that I have to be an athletic trainer since I’m a PE teacher. 3) We want a new adventure. I want my kids to experience other cultures. I want to see the world. And we can’t do that on current (or probably future) salary.

So, we are kind of jumping into this application process. I’ve spent so much time researching jobs and locations, reading lots of blogs, filling out applications, and attaching documents that I pray catch someone’s attention. I’m a little worried/annoyed that it seems that a lot of these schools go to these recruitment fairs to interview (in faraway places like London, Boston, Iowa…which seems like a rather weird location…) but to go to these fairs you have to either pay to register (plus travel expenses!) OR pay a couple hundred dollars to join the organization that is holding the fair (and then get into the fair for “free”…plus travel expenses). We are just putting this all in God’s hands and if he shuts the doors then we won’t go.

So, if you’re reading this and you have any advice or encouragement, please comment!
